The gentle whisper

As this article is being typed Hurricane Sandy is heading toward land on the East Coast, from New England to North Carolina.  Wind gusts from  80-90 mph are expected to cause significant flooding, power outages and damage throughout the coastal areas.  With these things in mind we should all be in a state of prayer for those affected by this storm.

In Luke 8:22-25 we see the account of Jesus calming a storm:

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?”he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

During this terrible storm the disciples felt hopeless.  They recognized the trouble they were in at that moment.  Fearfully, they woke Jesus up to alert him of their situation.  Jesus rebukes the storm and everything is still again.  After that, he addresses the disciples.  Jesus' simple question was, "Where is your faith?"  The problem was not the storm at all, it was the disciples faith in him.

When faith is required in the face of adversity we must understand who is in control.  Do you have something in your life that seems too big for you?  Is there something at work, school or home that is testing your faith?  Remember that God is in control and Jesus is in the boat with you.

Also, during your day today continue to lift up those in the path of this hurricane.
